Metromix Wins Construction Materials Industry Environment, Health and Safety Award

And the winner is ……… Metromix!

Metromix-awardRapid Global would like to extend a big congratulations to our client Metromix for winning the 2016 Cement Concrete & Aggregates Association EH&S Awards.

Metromix was awarded the Health and Safety Best Performance Category in NSW as a result of their significant achievements in implementing controls for effective contractor management and contractor safety compliance.

A leading supplier of construction materials in Sydney, NSW Australia, Metromix has 8 concrete plants and 2 quarries and supplies a wide area of NSW with high quality ready-mixed concrete and quarry products.

To drive greater safety compliance across their operations, the company has implemented contractor management software, online induction, site access systems and permit to work software resulting in effective and efficient risk management.

With multiple sites to manage, employee induction and training was a key objective along with the management of insurances, licences and inductions of contractors as well as Lorry Owner Drivers (LOD’s) who work as contract drivers. Metromix also needed to meet their Chain of Responsibility obligations as well as enhance site security and emergency management by recording the details of visitors to site.

“The main issue was contractors attending site and employees confirming up to date insurances, licences and inductions. With LOD’s it was also to keep track of Drivers licence, Truck rego and insurance.” Carl Feilberg, Risk Manager, Metromix

The solutions introduced to the business include Rapid Induct for online induction training, Rapid Contractor Management for contractor compliance, Rapid Access Systems for site sign in / sign out and Rapid Permit To Work for onsite work permit, including hot work permits, and safety licence management.

Further to this, Rapid Permit to Work was implemented to manage site safety licences and permits, allowing the company to track and manage all permits issued. In addition, a modification to the Rapid Access System was implemented to enable Metromix to manage their Chain of Responsibility obligations.

With the use of the contractor management software, the instance of lorry owner drivers (contract drivers) having out-dated documents is now rare due to the fact that they are not able to have their trucks loaded whilst they are suspended in the system.

“The major advantage of LOD’s signing in has provided the call centre with the ability to ensure all LOD’s are compliant before being loaded. The site based tablet can create an evacuation list for the site based on the people that have signed in. This can be viewed on the managers’ iPhone or by a printed list at site via the Bluetooth printer attached to each tablet.

Regulated heavy vehicle drivers signing in need to answer a mandatory question. If their response differs from the answer saved in the system the driver is suspended pending a face to face discussion with the site manager. The site manager will ensure the driver is fit for duty prior to the driver being reactivated and signing in again. The system also emails the relevant managers and call centre with details of people who are declined.” Carl Feilberg, Risk Manager, Metromix
